Villa, branded residence, or estate? How to choose the right stay

The three ways to book a luxury home, and how to know which one suits your trip.
The language of high-end rentals can blur together, but the differences matter once you've arrived. A standalone villa is a private home you book whole: maximum privacy, often a resident housekeeper, and a character entirely its own. A branded residence sits inside a hotel or resort, trading a little seclusion for service on tap — spa, dining, kids' club, twenty-four-hour room service. An exclusive-use estate is the largest of the three: a whole property and its team reserved for a single group.

As a rough guide, we steer couples and small families toward standalone villas, families with young children toward branded residences, and large groups or celebrations toward estates. Three questions usually settle it:
How much service do you want? Branded residences win on convenience; villas win on privacy.
How many of you are there? Past ten or twelve guests, an estate almost always makes more sense.
What is the occasion? A quiet week reads very differently from a milestone celebration.
Whatever you choose, the fundamentals are the same: visit (or trust someone who has), read the fine print on staffing and extras, and book early for peak weeks. The rest of this guide exists to do the first part for you.
